This specifies the probability of expected sensor readings for a particle given the actual sensor readings that the robot detects. This is done using a multi-variate Gaussian sensor model: This way each particle in the set will have a weight assigned to it, specifying the probability that the robot is actually in that location. Using the location where the robot started and keeping track of the motions executed, it is possible to compare real sensor readings with the ones expected from measurements done on the in-memory map of the world. The particle sets begin to carry too much uncertainty after the robot moves for a while, however distance sensors on the robot's body can be used to detect nearby objects. In practice, the two noise types need to be balanced and calibrated for the robot's characteristics (e.g. The next image shows how the prediction model can also assume high rotational noise, in which case the orientation is more uncertain: This was the case of high translational noise, in which the robot may drift sideways or it may travel for longer or shorter than desired, for a certain pair of wheel speeds. Notice how uncertainty in the predicted location increases as the robot moves: The following shows how the particle set expands over a period of motion, in order to account for different possible locations of the robot. Therefore multiple possible locations are maintained as the robot moves and accrues motion error. The wheel speeds are known and can be used in the motion model to compute predicted locations for each particle. This technique involves creating a set of particles, each of which represents a possible pose of the robot at a given time. Therefore, in the Webots implementation, the equations above are used at every simulation time step (64 ms) as part of the prediction step of a particle filter (Monte Carlo) localization algorithm. The problem is that these equations would only provide an estimated pose for a single robot instance. Then the distances can be combined with randomly drawn numbers from a univariate normal distribution in order to compute, for a given duration, the predicted coordinates and orientation, i.e. Which take the left and right wheel speeds in rads/second and convert it to actual travelled distance. It is important to model these two types of motion error, since the robot's body is subject to drift and slippage as it moves. It uses a basic motion model for 2-wheeled robots, with added Gaussian noise for the distance travelled in a period of time and for the orientation. The robots navigate the map using a differential steering mechanism. The EPuck robots have an in-memory grid-based representation of the map with the location of the obstacles specified: The controllers were written in Matlab, since matrix operations are performed quickly and it is easier to plot data while the simulation runs. The simulation was built using Webots 6.x. This could be seen as a taxi-hailing situation when a customer places an order and a taxi company sends the closest available vehicle.įor an example of the simulation running when several goal locations are generated and a decision is made as to which robot is assigned, see the video Implementation The objective is to minimize response time at the team-level, such that whenever a goal location is generated one of the robots will travel to it as soon as possible. This is an implementation of a multi-robot scenario in which multiple mobile robots need to travel as a team, on a map, to assigned locations.

Unfortunately, most gene banks worldwide lack the resources and funding to adequately store and protect their seeds. To prevent flooding from melting permafrost and extreme weather events, the vault underwent multi-million dollar upgrades. The Arctic is warming twice as fast as the rest of the globe – the rising temperatures, melting sea ice, and thawing permafrost are placing the vault’s future in jeopardy. This is well above the summer average of 5-7℃. In 2020, an Arctic heatwave produced record highs in Svalbard, where the temperature topped 21.7℃. The vault was designed to protect the world’s food supply against a climate crisis it is now being confronted by that very threat. This ensures populations in developing countries have equitable access to more affordable and healthier food, ultimately reducing hunger and malnutrition.Ĭhallenges: The Climate Crisis and the Arctic Circle Developing enhanced crops also improves nutrition and produces a more varied food supply. Gene banks provide genetic diversity to develop new and locally adapted crop varieties able to withstand heat, drought, floods, and disease. Diversity also promotes sustainable agriculture, mitigates environmental degradation, and ensures crops are resilient and adaptable to climate change and disease. Svalbard aims to conserve crop diversity by protecting the world’s food supply, and plays an active role in helping achieve the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal 2 (SDG), which is ‘Zero Hunger, Food Security and Sustainable Agriculture.’Ĭrop diversity ensures food security and protects nutritional food sources which in turn helps alleviate poverty. This is compounded by just four companies owning 60% of the world’s seed market.Ĭrop Diversity Matters – The Importance of Seed Saving In the United States alone, over 90% of fruit and vegetable varieties have been lost since the 1900s. According to the United Nations (UN) Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), these crops supply around 60% of the calories consumed daily by the world’s population. Now, crops have grown to become more susceptible to drought, pests, and disease.ĭecreased diversity has led the world’s food supply to become overly dependent on four major food crops: corn, rice, soy, and wheat. This promotes uniform crops and monoculture, which has the capacity to produce higher yields however, it has driven biodiversity loss and soil degradation. In addition to public health concerns, the over-saturation of chemicals has decimated beneficial insect populations, such as pollinators like bees and butterflies.Ĭompanies produce hybrid varieties which only grow a single generation of crops, meaning farmers can no longer save seeds each season and instead must purchase new seeds each year. These plants have been bred to withstand pesticides and herbicides, such as the controversial chemical glyphosate, a potential carcinogen (cancer-causing substance). Another change is t he commodification of seeds by private companies which has standardized and created homogeneous crop varieties. Within the past half-century, industrial agriculture has drastically changed farming practices, with new technology aiding large-scale crop production. Industrial Agriculture: Monoculture and Biodiversity Loss It holds a wealth of diversity, containing over 10,000 years of agricultural history, with seeds originating from almost every country in the world. The vault contains the world’s largest collection of agricultural biodiversity, with over 1.1 million seed samples, representing 5,500 plant species. In contrast, the Svalbard Vault is situated above sea level, with permafrost and dense rock keeping the seeds frozen at -18✬, without the need for electricity. Further, alternate gene banks located worldwide are threatened by erratic power supplies, lack of funding, and poor management. The Doomsday Vault provides a safeguard against natural and human-induced disasters that may threaten other seed banks and impact food security, such as disease, climate change, biodiversity loss, and war. It is located on Spitsbergen Island, in Norway’s Svalbard archipelago chosen for its remoteness, the gene bank acts as a backup collection for the world’s crop diversity. The Svalbard Global Seed Vault – commonly known as the ‘Doomsday Vault’ – lays buried beneath the permafrost, 150 metres into a mountainside within the Arctic Circle. – Stefan Schmitz, executive director of the Global Crop Diversity Trust (Crop Trust) “At a first glance, seeds may not look like much, but within them lies the foundation of our future food and nutrition security, and the possibility for a world without hunger.” How many scapes are there in total?ĭISH scapes: DISH scapes was first released in December 2019 and featured eight unique scenes produced with digital painting and animation. Plus, some Swifties hilariously posit that her Instagram of chickens wearing sunglasses was a reference to Taylor and Karlie in sunglasses - the “chicks,” if you will. In the Reputation song “So It Goes,” Swift sings, “Cut me into pieces, gold cage hostage to my feelings, and our pieces fall right into place.” Swift loves a puzzle, and these images actually look like puzzle pieces. On Tuesday night, Kaylor shippers picked up on something crucial: During Taylor’s performance of “New Years Day” at the TIME 100 Gala, Swift seemingly changed the lyrics from “I want your midnights” to “I want her midnights” not once, but twice. The theory is that Swift has been dropping hints about her love for Karlie Kloss since the Reputation era. For starters, most of the films shown are double features. In City of Industry, of all places, sits the Pacific Vineland Drive-In. It’s still possible to take kids to totally inappropriate movies in the comfort of your car. We laughed out loud when, in the latter flick, the Chaka-looking kid’s razor boomerang cut that guy’s fingers off. One of the most enduring images of Southern California from the 1950s through the 1970s was the drive-in movie, and the state boasted more than 200 outdoor screens by the late 1960s. #VINELAND DRIVE IN MOVIE#We think the best way to see the Tarantino/Rodriguez homage to 1970s and 1980s schlock cinema is by heading to an equally entertaining relic of a bygone era the drive-in movie theater. But before running off to The Grove, consider a truly authentic alternative. And yes, Los Angeles has definitely gone grindhouse crazy in general. Starting tomorrow, lots of folks are going to be rushing area theaters to check out the latest Quentin Tarantino+Robert Rodriguez splatterfest, Grindhouse. It was close with perennial Grand National Finals contender Homestead (IN), but Jenison and Rockford popped out the event’s top two scores, making a statement on behalf of the Great Lakes State.īoth bands were among the few from their home state that competed at Grand Nationals in 20, each appearing in Semifinals on both occasions. But it’s simply to qualify the statement that, maybe, Michigan’s top bands don’t garner the national BOA community spotlight garnered by other states - the national spotlight they certainly deserve.Ī pair of Michigan bands went into Toledo last weekend, at an event littered with Ohio and Indiana bands, some of which have been in or around the Grand National Finalist pool in recent years, and went 1-2 in the rankings. That’s not to knock on Michigan not at all. 20 each saw the same number of Michigan-based Grand Nationals participants. In 2022, five Michigan bands will compete - in comparison to 31 from Ohio and 15 from Indiana - at the season-ending BOA event. Many Michigan bands don’t end up making the trip, for one reason or another, to the BOA Grand Nationals. And that’s fair, those regions always produce a ton of competitive success in various scholastic marching circuits.īut the mitten-shaped state’s got some big-hitters. It’s always “Indiana” this and “Texas” that and “California” this. Michigan as a hotbed for high school marching band isn’t always talked about loudly, on a National scope. But this data is, if nothing else, interesting. If I had my educated guess, top scores will gradually normalize over the next few weeks, as they often do, with more permutations of more competitors at more venues. There’s no argument to be had or point to be made off of this information you could reasonably pin it to a wide variety of different factors, or simply argue there’s no correlation, which is likely true. The same experiment in 2022, featuring eight events, yields an output of about 77.200. It’s not a gigantic difference, but it’s a difference.ĭigging a little further, the average score of a top-three ensemble in seven September 2021 events - so, 21 total data points - was about 78.800. The same weekend in 2022 featured an average winning mark of about 81.500. But, yeah, in a very basic sense, scores are a little lower out of the gates than they were in September 2021.Īt events in 2021’s final weekend events, four winning scores averaged out to just shy of 83.000. With that in mind, this will be one to keep an eye on as more data points develop into the month of October - especially as Super Regionals roll around and data grows exponentially. Let’s make on thing clear it’s way too early to make sweeping statistical declarations about the BOA season. So, before we dive head-first into the gauntlet of BOA contests that is October, here are three interesting storylines you may have missed during two September weekends of competition: 1. My head’s still spinning a little bit and if you follow along with the BOA season, your head, too, will start spinning even faster, as the calendar’s 10th month will feature the vast majority of 2022 BOA events, including a pair of Super Regional events.
